Patrol 2 in 2012

Hello Patrol 2,

For those of you that might not be aware, I (George Gallie) was elected to lead Patrol 2 for 2012 at our October 2011 meeting. I must say that I have already had an outpouring of offers to aid with certain tasks, and I deeply appreciate it.

I wanted to take a few minutes to start a conversation about our plans for 2012. Those of you who know me, and likely even those who don't know me, recognize that I love jeeping. Nothing makes me happier then to be up in the mountains pushing both myself, and my rig. Having said that, I intend for 2012 to be a very active one for Patrol 2 on the trail. I also intend for Patrol 2 to stay very active in the MHJC in general helping with things like All for fun, and hopefully involving us more heavily in activies that the MHJC parent club organizes and runs. It is also my hope that we can do things together as a group that do not actually involve bouncing our rigs off of rocks.

Below I have a basic outline for what my goals are for runs for 2012. Please understand that these runs are not the only runs I hope Patrol 2 runs next year it is simply the runs that "I" am putting on the checklist. What I am asking from all our you is what runs do you want added onto the checklist? Are there any runs that are listed that you would like to lead? If so, please mention it. If I identified a leader for a run, and have not actually spoken to you yet, are you willing to lead that run? If I identified myself as a leader for a run, and you would like to lead it, please speak up. As always, any full member of patrol 2 can schedule a run for anytime they wish, and at any time they wish so that will certainly not be changing while I lead Patrol 2.

The second part of my post involves areas that I already have offers of help, or areas that help is still needed in. If you would like to volunteer for any of these positions, please let me know.

I will be keeping a running document on all run suggestions, as well as positions that people have volunteered to help with and positions that I still need help with. I will regularly update both our website, and our membership at Patrol 2 meetings.

I just wanna go jeepin!

Hey Guys,
A few years back Deb and I took the trail to Wheeler National Monument. This trail is by Creede Colorado where a lot of 4 wheel drive trails live. We spent 4 days in the area but the Wheeler National Monument trail took about 6 hours. It takes about 5 hours to get to South Fork by Hwy. 285 then about 15 min. to Cottonwood Cove which is a great place to stay. Cabins, Lodge and camping for a very reasonable rate. From there it is just a few min. to the trail head. Only thing is reservations must be made early as the Lodging fills up fast in the summer. Camping is allowed on the trail for free. This was a fun trip and we got to see the "who doos" on a short hike. This is not the typical National Monument - we went on the 4th of July Weekend and only saw one other couple the whole day. I would be willing to lead this trip.

Pat,

Trail sounds like a total hoot!

During 2012, when are you thinking of leading it?

I was thinking maybe two  weekends after 4th of July. Wheeler Lake Trail is Just south of Breckenridge. Wheeler National Monument is west of Alamosa to South Fork (just before Wolf Creek Pass) then north to Creede.

Is this the trail called "Wheeler Lake"?

I just wanna go jeepin!

Howdy Patrol 2,

Now that virtualy all of the positions I identified have volunteers, lets get back to the meat of the subject.

Certainly the list of runs I made up does not include all of the runs my friends within Patrol 2 would like to do in 2012. So take a little time and think about it. What runs do YOU want to do? If there is a run you have maybe heard about or read about or ran ten years ago and just want to do again, mention it! It will get put on the list, I promise.

What runs would you like to lead? If you cannot think of any other runs for us to do, maybe you are an old hand at one of the runs I put on our 2012 wish list and you would like to lead it? Leading a run is not such a hard task. All you really need to do is make reservations for our breakfast, if there is one, and be able to get us back to town. Heck, there were many times during the past year when I was leading a run, that I didnt even know where I was going! Just ask the people who were with us for the last day of our Mojave Trail trip and they can confirm that for you.

In the end, I want us all to just have a fun time out on the trail. Most of the trails I put on the list are in the middle to high scale as far as difficulty goes. But I, as well as many of you I am sure, just like to get into the mountains for a weekend. So if you know about a trail that is just plain scenic let us all know about it. While I love bouncing my rig off large rocks I also enjoy a relaxing day in the mountains taking pictures of views that many will never have that chance to do.

Don't be shy now!

I just wanna go jeepin!

1)  I Volunteer to lead Moody Hill - Crystal Mountain.

2)  How about putting on the list, Liberty trail, down south @ Independence trail, by Penrose Colorado?  Very difficult.  Expect damage.

3) Why do we have to set up all the trails we are going to do in 2012, now?  Just thought i would throw this out for discussion....

Vic :)

A faithful friend is beyond price, no sum can balance his worth." Sirach 6:14-15

Howdy Vic,

1. done
2. done
3. Only 11 of the 25 suggested runs have actually been scheduled. Of that number 4 of them are overnighters, 2 of them are "meeting" runs that are simply scheduled on the same weekend we would have those months meetings, 3 of them are runs that I intend on leading and I just penciled in the dates I wanted to run them on, and another two of them are runs I want to make sure happen, but am hoping someone else will step up and lead them. The other 14 runs on the list are just my, and now others wish list of runs they and I would like to see done at some point. So if nothing else is happening and someone wants an idea on someplace to go, they can look at this list get a rough idea of how tough the run is and how far away it is, and run it. I do not plan on scheduling any more runs for me to lead until at most a month prior to when I intend on running it. If others want to go ahead and start picking runs they would like to lead and put them on the calendar thats fine with me.

Hope that covers it all Vic.

I just wanna go jeepin!

Vic,

For what it's worth, it's my experience that Patrol 2 folks and Jeepers as a whole are very busy people with lots of non-Jeeping stuff going on in their daily lives.

Some of the more distant adventures like Rubicon, The Maze, anything in Moab, NM and SW Colorado require much more lead time. IMHO, wheeling adventures that require Jeepers to spend one night or more away from their home need to be announced well in advance of the event.

Concerning weekend day runs along our front range, if more than one is scheduled for any given weekend, is that a problem?

Geo,

Your choice of Patrol 2 runs for 2012 looks awesome.

If it will help, I'm willing to attend and be trip coordinator for Utah's The Maze / Poison Spring Canyon / Hole in the Rock (last week of April 2012, Patrol 2 members, friends and guests will have the opportunity to run one, two or all), Memorial Moab 2012 (Annual Memorial Day Weekend 2012), Patrol 2's Semi-Annual 4th of July Frolic (July 4th Weekend which, weather permitting, might allow Patrol 2 to perform our annual Mt. Antero maintenance), Mt. Antero the third week of July (if it can't be run to the top during the 4th of July weekend) and Patrol 2 Loves Jeeping Labor Day Weekend 2012 (Iron Chest, Hancock Pass, Tomichi Pass, Pearl Pass and beyond).

Yepper. It looks like 2012 is gonna be another mighty fine year for Jeeping....

I had said I will attend the Board meetings for you, George, but if anyone else wants to go, for the shear excitement of it all, just let me know and I will graciously bow out. (unless it's "free hat" day, or something worthwhile :-P )
I may have one or two meetings that I miss due to work, but I will pass those dates on to the other gracious volunteers when I know them.
Thanks for stepping up, George. (Or at least not stepping away :-) )

-- Glenn www.AssociatedPhoto.com I got food poisoning today. I don't know when I'll use it. -- Steven Wright

Thank you Glenn. I intend on enlisting every bit of help I can get for next year. So far you, Rich Stockton, and Jim CHambers have offered to help cover the meetings I cannot make and I deeply appreciate all of you volunteering your aid. And trust me, i fully intend on taking advantage of all of those offers. My intent with reguards to deputy Patrol leader is it will be a fluid position that is determined on a monthly basis depending on who can make the BOD and MHJC meetings. Not sure that fits into the MHJC bylaws or not, but from what I have read so far Deputy Patrol Leader is an appointed position that says nothing about how long that apointment can last. So I intend on taking full advantage of that and will simply apoint the Deputy Patrol Leader every month depending on everyones scheduling and availability for the next months meetings. As I read it the Deputy Patrol Leader is fully authorized to speak and vote on Patrol 2's behalf in the absense of the Patrol Leader. Please correct me if I am wrong in that interpretation or any of the other assumptions I am making above.

Sincerely,

Thank you Rich. Your help is greatly appreciated. Please see my above reply to Glenn's query and hopefully that explains how I am going to work this. Patrol 2 as your well aware is a huge Patrol within the MHJC. It's a team effort, and I deeply appreciate the simple fact that so many are offering to step up and help with running the patrol.

George, you're a natural! :)
Don't forget to add trail maintenance runs for Yankee Hill and Mt. Antero (late July-August) to the list.
Also, you will want a Membership Coordinator - someone to monitor the active roster (that Frank keeps), track who is/isn't renewing in the spring, prep packets for new members, communicate with prospective members and facilitate the application process, etc. If no one else would like to take it going forward, I can continue with it.
